On January 4, 2010 I walked close to ten miles in the Bayside<\/a> and Whitestone<\/a> neighborhoods of Queens*.<\/p>\n

Started by cutting through Lippmann Arcade<\/a> to board a bus (can’t remember which one, but it was probably the Q13) out to the edge of Bayside.<\/p>\n

Began the first leg by continuing the great Northern Boulevard project through Bayside<\/a>**:<\/p>\n

Then a stop at Oakland Lake<\/a> to check it out during the winter:<\/p>\n

P.S. 203<\/a> is an example of that 1960s(?)-style of Board of Education architecture:<\/p>\n

Then up Bell Boulevard through Bayside Hills up to Northern Boulevard<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Following a short bus ride over to the eastern edge of Beechhurst, I visited LeHavre On The Water<\/a>, one the builders of which was William Levitt, whose brother Alfred built Levittown:<\/p>\n

Down 154th Street<\/a> on the western edge of Beechhurst:<\/p>\n

Down 14th Road in Whitestone<\/a>:<\/p>\n

A stop at the awesomely fanciful St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church<\/a>, the church the AIA Guide to New York City<\/em> called a “psychedelic fantasy”:<\/p>\n

Up 150th Street through Whitestone<\/a>, that neighborhood’s main commercial strip:<\/p>\n

\"East<\/p>\n

\"150th<\/p>\n

A swing by Engine 295\/Ladder 144<\/a> over on 149th Street, which is a classic New York City firehouse:<\/p>\n

*We don’t usually bother mapping out the routes but my feet were sore for days afterward so I was curious.<\/p>\n
