I remembered the anecdote about Horatio Greenough&#8217;s statue of George Washington from one of Daniel Boorstin&#8217;s books, so I was excited to see it in person again (a summation of the story can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/stevereads.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/americans.html\">here<\/a> in the section about <em>The National Experience<\/em> volume &#8212; it&#8217;s a great story if you&#8217;ve never heard it):<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/nationalmuseumofamericanhistory\/04908-14-10.jpg\" alt=\"Horatio Greenough George Washington Statue, Second Floor, Smithsonian National Museum of American History, National Mall, Washington, D.C.\"><\/p>\n<p>Michelle Obama&#8217;s inauguration gown is on display, too:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/nationalmuseumofamericanhistory\/06508-14-10.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle Obama Gown, A First Lady's Debut Gallery, First Ladies at the Smithsonian Exhibit, Smithsonian National Museum of American History, National Mall, Washington, D.C.\"><\/p>\n<p>And of course Archie Bunker&#8217;s chair:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/nationalmuseumofamericanhistory\/10408-14-10.jpg\" alt=\"Archie Bunker's Chair, National Treasures of Popular Culture Exhibit, Third Floor West, Smithsonian National Museum of American History, National Mall, Washington, D.C.\"><\/p>\n<p>And Bill Clinton&#8217;s saxophone!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/nationalmuseumofamericanhistory\/13208-14-10.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Clinton's Saxophone, The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden Exhibit, Third Floor East, Smithsonian National Museum of American History, National Mall, Washington, D.C.\"><\/p>\n<p>We ate at Spike Mendelsohn&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/goodstuff\/index.htm\">Good Stuff<\/a> where the president has a burger named for him before heading down to Nationals Park to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/nationalspark\/08-14-10\/index.htm\">Diamondbacks beat up on the Nationals<\/a>. Everyone was geeked about Stephen Strasburg, but that was before he tore his arm ligament:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/nationalspark\/08-14-10\/3708-14-10.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen Strasburg Teaser, Outfield Scoreboard, View From Section 238, Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Washington Nationals, Nationals Park, Washington, D.C., August 14, 2010\"><\/p>\n<p>I really love the president mascots:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/nationalspark\/08-14-10\/2908-14-10.jpg\" alt=\"Presidents Race Presented By GEICO, Middle of Fourth Inning, View From Section 238, Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Washington Nationals, Nationals Park, Washington, D.C., August 14, 2010\"><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, we had the Nuevo Latino Dim Sum Brunch at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/cafeatlantico\/index.htm\">Caf\u00e9 Atl\u00e1ntico<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/cafeatlantico\/1808-15-10.jpg\" alt=\"Mushrooms With Egg 63 Degrees, Caf\u00e9 Atl\u00e1ntico, 405 8th Street NW, Washington, D.C.\"><\/p>\n<p>This was shortly after Spain won the World Cup, and I&#8217;m not sure if Jos\u00e9 Andr\u00e9s is still on observing a self-imposed no-octopus rule:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/cafeatlantico\/3208-15-10.jpg\" alt=\"No Octopus Notice, Caf\u00e9 Atl\u00e1ntico, 405 8th Street NW, Washington, D.C., August 15, 2010\"><\/p>\n<p>We ate ice cream at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/virginia\/alexandria\/thedairygodmother\/index.htm\">The Dairy Godmother<\/a> in Alexandria, where the president also visited:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/virginia\/alexandria\/thedairygodmother\/0608-15-10.jpg\" alt=\"President Obama Sat Here Chair, The Dairy Godmother, 2310 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia\"><\/p>\n<p>We took the bus back to New York from the palatial Bolt-Mega terminal at the future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/washingtondc\/citycenterdc\/index.htm\">CityCenter DC<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A summer weekend in D.C. visiting a friend . . .
