Everything that has transpired in Egypt over the last month or so has lent a fascinating retrospective perspective to the trip, and it&#8217;s weird to go through these pictures with the knowledge that perhaps much has already changed there and will continue to change in the months and years ahead. I mean, I guess all the ancient stuff &#8212; which occupied so much of our time in Egypt &#8212; will remain the same, but I imagine at least some of those images of Mubarak we saw all over the place will come down, if they haven&#8217;t already.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 27-28, 2010: New York To Cairo Via Amman<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/blog\/2010\/12\/27\/i-wish-we-were-on-a-plane-now\/\">a weather-related delay<\/a>, we were off on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/royaljordanian\/index.htm\">Royal Jordanian Airlines<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/cairointernationalairport\/index.htm\">Cairo<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/queenaliainternationalairport\/index.htm\">Amman<\/a>. Twenty-four hours later, we got to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/oasishotel\/index.htm\">hotel<\/a>. Long day &#8212; the less said about it, the better (though if you really want to hear more, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2011\/01\/14\/6042-miles-in-24-hours-works-out-to-just-over-252-miles-an-hour\/\">I won&#8217;t stop you<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 29, 2010: Cairo<\/strong><br \/>\nOur tour guides drove us around Cairo via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/ringroad\/index.htm\">Ring Road<\/a> to our first stop at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/egyptianmuseum\/index.htm\">Egyptian Museum<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/midantahrir\/index.htm\">Tahrir Square<\/a>. If I had known what Tahrir Square would come to represent in the weeks after we visited, I would have paid more attention to it. As it was, we were groggy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2011\/01\/30\/headline-protesters-swarm-streets-directly-in-front-of-cairos-famous-ding-dong-bazaar\/\">only thought to photograph the Ding Dong Bazaar<\/a>. Oh well, what do you do?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/midantahrir\/0212-29-10.jpg\" alt=\"Ding Dong Bazaar, Midan Tahrir\/Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While in Cairo, we also went back and forth across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/6thoctoberbridge\/index.htm\">6th October Bridge<\/a>. We saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/citadel\/index.htm\">Citadel<\/a> (next to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/cairofinancialcenter\/index.htm\">Cairo Financial Center<\/a>) and were to have visited the mosque there, but our guide decided to take us to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/ibntulunmosque\/index.htm\">Mosque of Ahmed Ibn Tulun<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/sheikhoun\/index.htm\">Al-Saliba Street<\/a> instead. Visits to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/copticcairo\/index.htm\">Coptic Cairo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/khanel-khalili\/index.htm\">Khan el-Khalili Market<\/a> before heading to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/el-gizastation\/index.htm\">El-Giza train station<\/a> for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/egyptianrailways\/index.htm\">overnight train<\/a> to Aswan.<\/p>\n<p>In all a busy day, and I wish we didn&#8217;t miss that first day because it made the breakneck pace of the trip that much more exhausting!<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 30, 2010: Aswan<\/strong><br \/>\nWe got to El-Giza train station at 7:29 p.m. on the 29th and didn&#8217;t get to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/aswanstation\/index.htm\">Aswan train station<\/a> until 1:11 p.m. The train ride itself was 14 1\/2 hours. That&#8217;s a long train ride.<\/p>\n<p>We settled in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/pyramisaisiscorniche\/index.htm\">the hotel<\/a> and set off to walk around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/shariaas-souq\/index.htm\">Sharia as-Souq<\/a> to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/shariaas-souq\/falafel\/index.htm\">something to eat<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2011\/01\/27\/friendliest-falafel-stand-ever\/\">see also<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A quick turnaround before setting out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/philae\/index.htm\">Philae Temple<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/fatimidcemetery\/index.htm\">Fatimid Cemetery<\/a> (a drive-by, at least), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/aswanlowdam\/index.htm\">Aswan Low Dam<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/aswanhighdam\/index.htm\">Aswan High Dam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/aswanmoon\/index.htm\">Dinner<\/a> did not include &#8220;crammed&#8221; (stuffed) pigeon (they were out). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/alflelhwelelh\/index.htm\">Dessert<\/a> was good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 31, 2010: Abu-Simbel\/Aswan<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat to do after a 14 1\/2 hour train ride? Get up at 2:30 a.m. to make the 3:30 a.m. military convoy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/abu-simbel\/index.htm\">Abu-Simbel<\/a> near the Sudanese border:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/abu-simbel\/05412-31-10.jpg\" alt=\"Temple of Ramesses II\/Great Temple, Abu Simbel, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What to do after getting up at 2:30 a.m. to go down to basically the Sudanese border? Clearly, you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/index.htm\">sleep on a traditional felucca boat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no wonder we were so exhausted for so much of this trip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/12-31-10\/index.htm\">Day one<\/a> of the felucca stopped at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/nubianvillage\/index.htm\">Nubian Village<\/a> just a few miles away from our hotel in Aswan. We spent New Year&#8217;s Eve on the boat &#8212; forced ourselves to stay awake &#8212; I&#8217;ve been many odd places for New Year&#8217;s Eve but this was probably the oddest place to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 1, 2011: Felucca Cruise<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/01-01-11\/index.htm\">Day two<\/a> of the felucca cruise. We woke up and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/nubianvillage\/overlook\/index.htm\">took in the landscape<\/a> from near our docking point:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/15201-01-11.jpg\" alt=\"Nile River From Hill Near Nubian Village, Aswan, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We floated underneath the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/aswanbridge\/index.htm\">Aswan Bridge<\/a>. We swam in the Nile!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/21501-01-11.jpg\" alt=\"Felucca Cruise, Nile River, Aswan, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>January 2, 2011: Felucca Morning\/Drive To Luxor<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/aswan\/felucca\/01-02-11\/index.htm\">Disembarking the felucca<\/a>, then a groggy trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/komombo\/komombotemple\/index.htm\">Kom Ombo Temple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/edfu\/edfutemple\/index.htm\">Edfu Temple<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/edfu\/edfu\/index.htm\">Edfu<\/a>, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/edfu-luxor\/index.htm\">Edfu to Luxor<\/a> before settling in at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/pyramisaisishotelluxor\/index.htm\">the hotel<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/khalidibnal-walidstreet\/index.htm\">Khaled Ibn El Waild Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Quick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/arkwrights\/index.htm\">grub<\/a>, quick shower. More to see. Lots more. So tired by this point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/karnak\/index.htm\">Karnak Temple<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/karnak\/03801-02-11.jpg\" alt=\"Great Hypostyle Hall, Karnak Temple Complex, Luxor, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/luxortemple\/index.htm\">Luxor Temple<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/luxortemple\/00901-02-11.jpg\" alt=\"First Pylon, Obelisk and Colossi of Ramesses II, Luxor Temple, Luxor, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dinner at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/sofra\/index.htm\">Sofra<\/a> was good (highly recommended!) and &#8212; gasp! &#8212; even kind of relaxing. Mr. Fish took us back toward the hotel (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2011\/01\/25\/you-only-really-use-street-lights-and-headlights-half-the-time-anyway\/\">see also<\/a>). We tried <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/murphys\/index.htm\">getting a beer<\/a> but that was a little tiring, too. Finally to sleep.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 3, 2011: Luxor West Bank<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter barely sleeping for the last six days, it made sense that we would continue the pattern and get up early to go look at more of ancient Egypt. First stop, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/colossiofmemnon\/index.htm\">Colossi of Memnon<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/colossiofmemnon\/3301-03-11.jpg\" alt=\"Colossi of Memnon, West Bank, Luxor, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Second stop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/medinethabu\/index.htm\">Medinet Habu<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/medinethabu\/1101-03-11.jpg\" alt=\"Medinet Habu\/Temple of Ramesses III, West Bank, Luxor, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Third stop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/deirel-bahri\/index.htm\">Deir el-Bahari<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/deirel-bahri\/6301-03-11.jpg\" alt=\"Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Deir el-Bahari, West Bank, Luxor, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fourth stop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/aboelhassanalabaster\/index.htm\">Abo El Hassan Alabaster Factory<\/a>. Fifth stop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/valleyofthekings\/index.htm\">Valley of the Kings<\/a> just past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/howardcarterhouse\/index.htm\">Howard Carter&#8217;s House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Back across the Nile River to our hotel via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/mubaraktouristroad\/index.htm\">Mubarak Touristic Road<\/a>. Don&#8217;t know if they changed the name or not since we visited.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/ritzrestaurant\/index.htm\">Lunch<\/a>, then walking along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/corniche\/index.htm\">Corniche<\/a> toward the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/souq\/index.htm\">market<\/a>. Construction on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/avenueofthesphinxes\/index.htm\">Avenue of the Sphinxes<\/a> plus an outdated map in the guidebook led to a detour.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the market:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/avenueofthesphinxes\/3801-03-11.jpg\" alt=\"Neighborhood off of Avenue of the Sphinxes, Luxor, Egypt, January 3, 2011\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/avenueofthesphinxes\/3901-03-11.jpg\" alt=\"Neighborhood off of Avenue of the Sphinxes, Luxor, Egypt, January 3, 2011\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the market:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/souq\/1001-03-11.jpg\" alt=\"Scarabs, El-Souk Market, Luxor, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/fairtradecenter\/index.htm\">We got shopping done<\/a>, then set off to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/jewelofthenile\/index.htm\">dinner<\/a> (a trek, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2011\/01\/28\/all-of-egypt-is-an-irish-kitchen\/\">that<\/a>), then set out for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/luxor\/luxorstation\/index.htm\">train station<\/a> to get back on the train to Cairo again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 4, 2011: Cairo<\/strong><br \/>\nSettled in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/zayedhotel\/index.htm\">the hotel<\/a> overlooking a nice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/portsaidsquare\/index.htm\">square<\/a> in the Mohandeseen section of Giza. We made up our visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/pyramids\/index.htm\">pyramids<\/a> on this &#8220;free&#8221; day, and got to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/saqqara\/index.htm\">Saqqara<\/a> as well:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/pyramids\/05201-04-11.jpg\" alt=\"Pyramid of Khafre, Giza Pyramid Complex, Cairo, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/saqqara\/2901-04-11.jpg\" alt=\"Step Pyramid of Djoser (Zoser), Saqqara Complex, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/giza\/index.htm\">Giza<\/a>, like its neighbor Cairo (think &#8220;Minneapolis\/St. Paul&#8221;), stretches out for miles and miles. Even though they&#8217;re building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/saftallaban\/index.htm\">elevated highways<\/a> and even a subway system, it&#8217;s still pretty chaotic. (&#8220;Chaos&#8221; is maybe a poor choice of words these days, but you get the idea.)<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in the neighborhood, there is top-notch koshary at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/cairo\/elomda\/index.htm\">El Omda Restaurant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 5, 2011: Cairo To Sinai<\/strong><br \/>\nWe took <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/highway33\/index.htm\">Highway 33<\/a> (I&#8217;m not sure how many people actually call it &#8220;Highway 33,&#8221; but I think that&#8217;s what it is) through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/highway33\/ahmedhamditunnel\/index.htm\">tunnel under the Suez Canal<\/a> into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/highway33\/index.htm\">Sinai<\/a>. There&#8217;s not much between Cairo and the Red Sea coast save for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/highway33\/sinairesthouse\/index.htm\">bathroom<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/nakhl\/nakhl\/index.htm\">breaks<\/a>, but the scenery is stunning in a lot of parts.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s exciting when the Red Sea finally emerges at the end of the drive, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/highway66\/index.htm\">the drive along the coast<\/a> is also beautiful. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/fiordbayresthouse\/index.htm\">Fjord<\/a> south of Taba is pretty:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/highway66\/00501-05-11.jpg\" alt=\"The Fjord From Fiord Bay Rest House, Highway 66 Near Taba, Sinai, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We made it to Dahab late in the afternoon and checked in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/dyarnahotel\/index.htm\">the hotel<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/mashrabastreet\/index.htm\">Mashraba Street<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/index.htm\">Dahab<\/a> is about &#8220;relaxing&#8221; and &#8220;chilling&#8221; and you are reminded of this constantly when you visit there:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/masbat\/06401-06-11.jpg\" alt=\"Chillax Dahab Gourmet Burger Restaurant, Masbat Waterfront Promenade, Dahab, Sinai, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/elfanar\/index.htm\">ate<\/a> and basically went to bed. Unbelievably, the first night where we wouldn&#8217;t have to get up before, say, 6:45 a.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 6, 2011: Dahab<\/strong><br \/>\nSnorkeling at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/bluehole\/index.htm\">Blue Hole<\/a>, just north of Dahab. Spectacular, and not even the sight of 200 Mikhail Prokhorov wannabes stomping all over the coral in order to rush back to waterfront hubbly bubbly can detract from the marvel of seeing what&#8217;s going on underneath the water&#8217;s surface. Really cool &#8212; and definitely glad we did that:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/bluehole\/04201-06-11.jpg\" alt=\"Camels, Blue Hole, Red Sea, Dahab, Sinai, Egypt\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/mashrabapromenade\/index.htm\">Walking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/market\/index.htm\">all<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/bridge\/index.htm\">around<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/masbatpromenade\/index.htm\">Dahab<\/a> and eating at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/yalla\/index.htm\">one<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/dahab\/funnymummy\/index.htm\">two<\/a> of the many shorefront places before leaving the next day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 7, 2011: Dahab, Egypt To Wadi Musa, Jordan Via Eilat, Israel<\/strong><br \/>\nStill time for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/pharaohsisland\/index.htm\">at least one stop<\/a> before making it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/egypt\/sinai\/taba-eilat\/index.htm\">Taba to cross into Israel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It took <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/israel\/eilat\/route90\/index.htm\">just a little more than fifteen minutes<\/a> to get to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/israel\/eilat\/arava-aqaba\/index.htm\">the Jordanian border<\/a>. Stuff is really close together in some parts of the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/aqaba\/aqaba\/index.htm\">Aqaba<\/a> we took the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/deserthighway\/index.htm\">Desert Highway<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadirum\/index.htm\">Wadi Rum<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadirum\/07801-07-11.jpg\" alt=\"View From Bluff Near Mushroom Rock, Wadi Rum, Jordan\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We got a well-deserved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/nabateanhammam\/index.htm\">steam bath and massage<\/a> before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/midtownrestaurant\/index.htm\">eating<\/a> and checking in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/petrapalace\/index.htm\">the hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 8, 2011: Petra, Jordan<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/petra\/index.htm\">Petra<\/a>. Knocked another wonder of the world off the list. It&#8217;s pretty fantastic:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/petra\/07601-08-11.jpg\" alt=\"Al-Khazneh (The Treasury), Petra, Wadi Musa, Jordan\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/redcaverestaurant\/index.htm\">Ate<\/a>, watched the sunset from the hotel room and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/suncityrestaurant\/index.htm\">ate again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 9, 2011: Wadi Musa To Amman<\/strong><br \/>\nBefore leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/wadimusa\/index.htm\">Wadi Musa<\/a> our driver took us by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimusa\/ainmusa\/index.htm\">Moses&#8217; Well<\/a> before starting up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/kingshighway\/index.htm\">King&#8217;s Highway<\/a> toward Amman.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, we took in the sights of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/tafila\/tafila\/index.htm\">Tafila<\/a> (which, if our guide is to be trusted, is kind of like the New Jersey of Jordan &#8212; no offense to New Jersey or Tafila, of course). The butcher shops there are impressive:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/kingshighway\/07001-09-11.jpg\" alt=\"Butcher Shop, King's Highway, Tafila, Jordan\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Continuing up King&#8217;s Highway, we visited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/karak\/karakcastle\/index.htm\">Karak Castle<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/karak\/karak\/index.htm\">Karak<\/a>, drove through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/wadimujib\/index.htm\">Wadi Mujib<\/a>, saw the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/madaba\/stgeorges\/index.htm\">Madaba Map<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/madaba\/madaba\/index.htm\">Madaba<\/a> and stopped by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/mountnebo\/index.htm\">Mount Nebo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We learned about the palatial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/everestresort\/index.htm\">Everest Resort<\/a> on our way into Amman, checked in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/alwaleed\/index.htm\">the hotel<\/a> near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/wakalatstreet\/index.htm\">Wakalat Street<\/a> and took a taxi over to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/jabalamman\/index.htm\">Jabal Amman<\/a> where we got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/cupsandkilos\/index.htm\">coffee<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/booksatcafe\/index.htm\">a drink<\/a> and ate a fantastic dinner at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/fakhreldin\/index.htm\">Fakhr El-Din<\/a> where the raw lamb platter blew our minds (I was thinking we&#8217;d tried something wonderful and exotic until we learned later that there are several places in Brooklyn that also serve this &#8212; apparently there isn&#8217;t anything you can&#8217;t already get in New York . . . disappointing; that said, this raw lamb was pretty brilliant, raw lamb being what it is, of course):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/fakhreldin\/0401-09-11.jpg\" alt=\"Fakhr El-Din Raw Platter, Fakhr El-Din, Jabal Amman, Amman, Jordan\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>January 10, 2011: Jerash and The Dead Sea<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are these beautiful images of the giant Abdali urban project on the back of the Royal Jordanian boarding passes (which I forgot to take a picture of). For now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/amman\/abdali\/index.htm\">here&#8217;s what it looks like<\/a> as you pass it on your way north out of Amman. We were headed out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/jerash\/gerasa\/index.htm\">Jerash<\/a>. Yes, you bob up and down in the highly salinated water. It also tastes like poop if you happen to get some near your mouth, which you really shouldn&#8217;t try to do. And then you&#8217;re like over a thousand feet below <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/jordan\/deadsea\/sealevel\/index.htm\">sea level<\/a>. I had been looking forward to swimming in the Dead Sea for the whole trip, and it was still strange when I first plopped in the water. He said to act like we were American investors or something, so we tried to do that.
