{"id":469,"date":"2013-03-06T12:27:12","date_gmt":"2013-03-06T17:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/blog\/?p=469"},"modified":"2013-03-06T12:27:12","modified_gmt":"2013-03-06T17:27:12","slug":"gas-grass-or-pass-then-well-plant-a-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/blog\/2013\/03\/06\/gas-grass-or-pass-then-well-plant-a-tree\/","title":{"rendered":"Gas, Grass Or Pass: Then We&#8217;ll Plant A Tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We got to visit the relatively new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/queens\/elmhurst\/elmhurstpark\/index.htm\">Elmhurst Park<\/a> on the former site of the Elmhurst Gas Tanks, the gas holding tanks that sat next to the LIE until Keyspan began to dismantle the tanks in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>If you make a reference to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bumper-Sticker-Grass-Rides-Free\/dp\/B00551HPPW\">the greatest bumper sticker of all time<\/a>, of course I&#8217;ll title a post accordingly. I&#8217;m guessing the language for this interpretive sign came from the top:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/elmhurst\/elmhurstpark\/03-05-13\/4403-05-13.jpg\" alt=\"Elmhurst Park, Elmhurst, Queens, March 5, 2013\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if the mounds come from remediated gunk or what, but they are a fun homage to the site&#8217;s former use:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/elmhurst\/elmhurstpark\/03-05-13\/3203-05-13.jpg\" alt=\"Elmhurst Park, Elmhurst, Queens, March 5, 2013\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I say that because if the tanks were still there, the one thing you&#8217;d want to do would be to climb to the top of them to see the view. So you basically still can in a way:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/elmhurst\/elmhurstpark\/03-05-13\/1403-05-13.jpg\" alt=\"Elmhurst Park, Elmhurst, Queens, March 5, 2013\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And I think that&#8217;s what the designers intended &#8212; it&#8217;s the only way to interpret the periscope play toys located around the park:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/elmhurst\/elmhurstpark\/03-05-13\/2603-05-13.jpg\" alt=\"Playground, Elmhurst Park, Elmhurst, Queens, March 5, 2013\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Christ, look what my life has become: I&#8217;m deconstructing a playground.<\/p>\n<p>A final note &#8212; I&#8217;m pretty sure one of those huge boulders around the park <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/10\/28\/nyregion\/28rock.html\">came from Fort Greene<\/a>.
