Caveat Pleasure

Counterfeit Louis Vuitton handbags, sure. But counterfeit condoms, too? Not to sound harsh, but if you’re cheap enough to buy condoms at a 99-cent store, you probably deserve what you get:

Careful with those Trojan brand condoms from the discount store. They may not be the real thing.

Same with the Barbie doll and the Louis Vuitton handbag.

In raids in the metropolitan area yesterday, federal agents arrested at least eight people and charged them with heading a counterfeit products ring. Authorities say the ring has been smuggling into the country and then distributing massive quantities of fake brand-name goods manufactured in China, including Apple iPods, Major League Baseball and National Football League caps and Marvel comic books.

The counterfeits, which included millions of the phony Trojans, were sold for the past three years mainly in small discount stores in the area, as well as elsewhere in the country, including Texas and Virginia, according to court documents.

A spokeswoman for Church and Dwight, the company that manufactures the legitimate Trojan condoms in the United States, declined to comment on whether the counterfeit Chinese condoms could fail to prevent pregnancies or the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

But a source familiar with the federal investigation said that while the counterfeit condoms were of inferior quality, samples had been tested and they were no riskier to use than legitimate ones.

The packaging of the Chinese condoms is almost identical to the legitimate ones, except that the counterfeit packaging is plastic, while the legitimate product is packaged in aluminum foil, said another source familiar with the investigation. “They [the counterfeiters] spent all their money on printing,” said the source.

Stand Clear Of The Cimex Lectularius

It’s not just your grubby friends and Maya Rudolph’s couches — they’re on the subway, too:

At a recent Department of Housing, Preservation and Development forum on the subject, a city bedbug educator admitted to seeing the pests on benches in subway stations — in one case, catching a ride on an unsuspecting straphanger’s caboose at Brooklyn’s Hoyt-Schermerhorn station, according to people at the meeting.

The official, identified as Edward Brownbear, also reported seeing the bugs on wooden benches at the Union Square and Fordham Road stations in Manhattan and The Bronx, respectively.

For Fans Of Other Teams, Starting Under .500 In April For The Second Straight Year Is Business As Usual . . .

. . . but Yankees fans aren’t like other fans. Add to the annals of Yankee-hating lore:

The boozed-up Yankee fan from hell who ran over and killed a Red Sox supporter last week had a crush on Derek Jeter and a living room dominated by Pinstripe regalia.

A neighbor of Ivonne Hernandez, 43, who was charged with murder for allegedly running down Matthew Beaudoin in her Dodge Intrepid in Nashua, said the Bronx-bred fan loved the handsome shortstop.

“She thought he was hot and had beautiful eyes,” said the 28-year-old mom, who declined to be identified.

She was less excited by Alex Rodriguez, who she felt was a “wuss,” the Nashua neighbor recounted.

. . .

Hernandez, taunted by Red Sox fans outside a bar, bounced the 29-year-old off her windshield at up to 60 mph, witnesses said.

. . .

Officials said Friday’s events turned deadly not long after Hernandez slapped a female bartender outside a bar. The bartender’s friends chased Hernandez to her car and, seeing the Yankee logo on her rear windshield, began chanting, “Yankees suck!”

Hernandez hurriedly drove away, then stopped.

“She turned her car around and gunned the engine toward Matthew,” a witness told The Post yesterday. “She hit him and he was on the windshield. He flew 40 feet in the air.”

The witness said he cradled Matthew’s body in his arms, as he gasped for air. Beaudoin was taken off life support the next day.

Officials said Hernandez claimed she only wanted to scare the hecklers and expected them to get out the way.

Hernandez is being held without bail on charges of murder and aggravated DWI.

In Case You Were Wondering Why Al Sharpton Is Hitting The Streets

. . . class acts like this:

The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating a cruel prank call to the family of Sean Bell’s fiancée that originated from the Manhattan offices of a prominent police union, The Post has learned.

“Ha, ha, ha,” someone said in a 1:15 p.m. Friday phone call to the home of Nicole Bell’s father Les Paultre, according to a police source.

The number for the Sergeants Benevolent Association came up on the caller ID.

. . .

The president of the union, Edward Mullins, said, “If the accusations are true, we will deal with it.”

Don’t Dump On The Bronx!

Can’t you people quit using the Bronx as the movie set for your amateur Soprano murder plot? It’s unfair to the borough:

A dumped lover hired his cousin to kill his teenage ex and then tried to cover it up as a botched Bronx robbery — even screaming after his bumbling relative, “You gotta shoot me,” too, when he forgot, cops said yesterday.

Carlos Cruz and killer cousin Devon Miller appeared to be within a hair of getting away with their fiendish plot — until Miller’s dreadlocks did them in, sources said.

A woman looking out her apartment window just after the Sunday shooting saw Cruz chasing a man down the street and told cops the thug turned around and fired at his pursuer. She described the shooter as a hulking man with dreadlocks.

When Miller later showed up at Jacobi Hospital supposedly to console Cruz as he recovered from a minor gunshot wound to the thigh, an eagle-eyed detective recognized him from the description.

That set an investigation into motion that ended with Cruz confessing, sources said.

Cruz paid his 25-year-old cousin — a convicted murderer — $1,000 to shoot Chelsea Frazier, his on-again, off-again girlfriend and the mother of their 14-month-old, Elijah, police said.

The explosive end to the case came less than two days after Cruz told cops that he and Frazier, 18, were the random victims of a street robbery gone awry.

Cruz had allegedly lured Frazier to The Bronx from their home in Southbridge, Mass., for a shopping excursion as part of the plot.
