Freewheeling Reporting And Wild Speculation . . .

Maybe the NYPD Intelligence Division should just start blogging:

The NYPD’s unsanctioned report, which was widely circulated by media outlets, including CNN, stunned officials on both continents. It not only contradicted the view of the Kenyans and global investigators that the terrorists had been killed, but suggested the Kenyans had bungled the response to the bloodshed.

The schism was so deep that the U.S. State Department tried to assuage the Kenyans by issuing a rare public rebuke of the New York Police Department.

Within days of the controversial NYPD report, Linda Greenfield-Thomas, the top State Department official for Africa, officially announced that the NYPD opinion did not reflect the U.S. government position.

Extra Swiss, Please

Live by the staged photo op, pie by the staged photo op:

The mayor, on a pilgrimage on Friday to Goodfellas, a venerable Staten Island pizzeria, smiled, nodded at his slice and then proceeded to do the unthinkable: eat it with a knife and fork.

We Start When We Think Everything Is Fully Prepared

Which is to say, the turkey will be on the table in no time:

At a news conference on Tuesday, Mr. de Blasio was asked about his penchant, unchanged since his elevation to the mayoralty, to arrive late to scheduled appearances with reporters.

“We start when we think everything is fully prepared,” said Mr. de Blasio, whose tendency to keep journalists waiting — nearly an hour at some recent events — has already spawned a short-lived Twitter account, @HowLateWasBDB.

“I’m very comfortable with the way we’re doing things,” the mayor added.

The City’s First Public Advocate Mayor

And the first rule of effective leadership is “summon to press conference about unrelated issue first, negotiate expired contracts later”:

Mr. de Blasio, a onetime grass-roots advocate, has moved into full organizing mode as he prepares for the start of the Albany legislative session. His event on Monday, in which he presented a united front with union officials, was only the latest in a string of news conferences that have doubled as rallies for the prekindergarten plan, and he has helped assemble a group of celebrity activists to aid his efforts.

On Monday, the mayor gestured toward the labor leaders — including the heads of powerful unions like the teachers’ and other city workers’ who will face his administration in contract talks this year — and said, “This is not something you see every day.”

The Shepard Fairey Of Public Advocates

Dasani has a posse:

When those conditions didn’t improve, James said, she acted to publicize the plight of Dasani Coates, a 12-year-old homeless girl subsequently spotlighted in a lengthy Times series.

“I was aware of it and had a little bit something to do with it,” James insisted on NY1 Wednesday night, speaking of the Times exposé.

“And, in fact, I had established a task force on Auburn, and the conditions continued. And so we decided to work together to basically put on the front page of The New York Times the face of poverty in the City of New York.”

It wasn’t James’ first attempt to portray herself as a champion of the homeless — at the inauguration, she invited young Dasani to stand at her side for the swearing-in.

But the Times refuted James’ account, saying she had nothing to do with its articles.

“Andrea Elliott [the Times reporter] met Dasani in the course of interviewing residents outside the Auburn shelter, and exposed conditions there by following the family. Andrea never talked to Ms. James, nor was she source for the story,” Times assistant managing editor Matt Purdy said in a statement.

After being called out for her lie, James quickly backtracked and changed her story.

“I commend the New York Times for highlighting this important issue on their front page but, to be clear, I was not a source behind The New York Times’ feature on Dasani and did not intend to imply so,” James said in a statement.
