It looks like the case of (alleged) coffee tosser Sen. Ada Smith may go to trial<\/a>, providing ample opportunity to discern the State Senator’s exact weight:<\/p>\n

Embattled state Sen. Ada Smith returned to Albany City Court last Thursday, rejecting a deal that would have kept her out of prison for allegedly throwing hot coffee on a former aide.<\/p>\n

The deal required that the Jamaica Democrat plead guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge, attend anger management courses and pay a fine in return for avoiding jail time. The 18 year incumbent faces up to a year in prison in convicted of charges stemming from a March 21 altercation with staffer Jennifer Jackson.<\/p>\n

Jackson alleges that Smith threw hot coffee in her eyes after Jackson made a comment about Smith’s weight. According to court papers, Smith announced upon returning to her Albany office that she had lost 4.3 pounds. Jackson responded, “Oh, that’s good senator, but at the rate you go around I would have thought you’d lose 20 pounds.” Smith then allegedly threw coffee in Jackson’s eyes. After Jackson quit, Smith pulled out the aide’s hairpiece and threatened to kill her, according to Jackson’s testimony.<\/p>\n

Smith tells a different story, denying all of Jackson’s allegations She said that Jackson responded to her weight loss announcement by saying, “Senator, you need to lose 100 pounds.” In court last Thursday, Smith announced that she had lost 11.6 pounds.<\/p>\n

Smith’s attorneys have until May 25 to file motions in the case.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
