{"id":1116,"date":"2006-06-02T10:18:30","date_gmt":"2006-06-02T18:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2006\/06\/please_tap_again_at_this_turnstile.html"},"modified":"2006-06-02T10:18:30","modified_gmt":"2006-06-02T18:18:30","slug":"please_tap_agai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/06\/please_tap_agai.html","title":{"rendered":"Please Tap Again At This Turnstile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New &#8220;smart card&#8221; technology <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/news\/regionalnews\/64554.htm\">will be introduced in July on the Lexington Avenue line<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Swiping a MetroCard is one step closer to going out of turnstile.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in mid-July, straphangers on the Lexington Avenue line will be able to whisk through a turnstile by tapping it with a &#8220;smart card&#8221; &#8212; or even by tapping their wallet or purse with the card inside.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot program, which is being jointly paid for by MasterCard and Citibank, will help the MTA decide whether to upgrade the entire system to a &#8220;contactless payment&#8221; technology.<\/p>\n<p>The six-month trial will be confined to Lexington Avenue stations between 138th Street in the Bronx and Borough Hall in Brooklyn, as well as 23rd Street in Long Island City.<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>Straphangers said they are all for anything that speeds up their commute, but will believe it when they see it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes I have to swipe [a MetroCard] 16 times,&#8221; said George Rodriguez, 39, who got into the Lincoln Center station yesterday &#8212; after three attempts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I even missed a train this way once.
