{"id":122,"date":"2005-02-08T08:35:39","date_gmt":"2005-02-08T16:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2005\/02\/gates_update.html"},"modified":"2005-02-08T08:35:39","modified_gmt":"2005-02-08T16:35:39","slug":"gates_update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/02\/gates_update.html","title":{"rendered":"Gates Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Workers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/local\/story\/278808p-238906c.html\">have begun putting up the orange support beams<\/a> for Christo and Jeanne-Claude&#8217;s Gates project in Central Park.<\/p>\n<p>Jeanne-Claude explains the project to a group of children:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Know why we&#8217;re doing this?&#8221; Jeanne-Claude asked children yesterday after unexpectedly getting out of a car on East Drive near 90th St.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are a work of art, and a work of art is for nothing,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Only a work of art, for joy and beauty.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, the Daily News omitted the children&#8217;s responses.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Post, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/news\/regionalnews\/40140.htm\">doing the Postian thing<\/a>, quotes an 81-year-old retiree doing the 81-year-old retiree thing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em> Park-goers seemed excited yesterday as they watched the much-hyped project take form.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s good that they are challenging people to re-envision their conception of a place they know so well,&#8221; said Chris Martin, 27, a Brooklyn poet.<\/p>\n<p>Others weren&#8217;t sold.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The park is for everyone, not for one person to gum up with their whimsical, individualist fancies,&#8221; said Louis Thorn, 81, a Manhattan retiree.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bah humbug!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/scrapbook\/christo02-08-05.jpg\" alt=\"Placing Support Beams, Preparations for Christo and Jeanne Claude's The Gates Project, Central Park, February 8, 2005\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Workers have begun putting up the orange support beams for Christo and Jeanne-Claude&#8217;s Gates project in Central Park.
