{"id":1844,"date":"2006-12-04T10:39:39","date_gmt":"2006-12-04T18:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2006\/12\/yet_another_reason_to_skip_school.html"},"modified":"2008-01-24T15:26:37","modified_gmt":"2008-01-24T20:26:37","slug":"yet_another_rea_1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/12\/yet_another_rea_1.html","title":{"rendered":"Yet Another Reason To Skip School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As with the flu, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/12042006\/news\/regionalnews\/tests__pests_regionalnews_david_andreatta_and_heidi_singer.htm\">bedbugs are using schools to jump from household to household<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>As the city grapples with a resurgence of the pesky critters in hot-sheet motels and Park Avenue penthouses, it appears the tiny bloodsuckers are hitchhiking their way into classrooms on the coats of schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p>There have been 34 confirmed cases of bedbugs in 24 city schools since Oct. 1, according to the city Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the cases reflect a rise in bedbugs in schools is impossible to know because the department only began informally asking schools to record sightings this fall in response to a surge of infestations across the city.<\/p>\n<p>A department spokeswoman insisted the pests were not running rampant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There have been absolutely no infestations,&#8221; said the spokeswoman, Marge Feinberg. &#8220;There are one or two [bugs] in each case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although bedbugs are not considered a major health threat because they do not transmit disease, they can leave nasty, itchy welts and be expensive to exterminate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were so scared that we would bring it home,&#8221; said a staffer who requested anonymity at PS 70 in Long Island City, one of several Queens schools to report bedbugs this fall. &#8220;It was all over the neighborhood, [so] the bodegas started carrying bedbug spray.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the DOE, there were 16 confirmed bedbug cases in Queens schools, 15 in Brooklyn, two in Manhattan and one in a Bronx school.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As with the flu, bedbugs are using schools to jump from household to household: As the city grapples with a resurgence of the pesky critters in hot-sheet motels and Park Avenue penthouses, it appears the tiny bloodsuckers are hitchhiking their way into classrooms on the coats of schoolchildren.
