{"id":1964,"date":"2007-01-02T11:48:43","date_gmt":"2007-01-02T19:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2007\/01\/good_old_american_competition.html"},"modified":"2007-01-02T11:48:43","modified_gmt":"2007-01-02T19:48:43","slug":"good_old_americ","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2007\/01\/good_old_americ.html","title":{"rendered":"Good Old American Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Observers were quick to blame the transfat ban for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/01022007\/news\/regionalnews\/chicken_man_burns_down_rival_bx__eatery_regionalnews_eric_lenkowitz___and_perry_chiaramonte.htm\">increased anxiety among the city&#8217;s food purveyors<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Kabeer Ahmad, 32, the proprietor of the Kennedy Fried Chicken shop at 868 Hunts Point Ave., was nabbed for allegedly torching the Twin Donut shop next door at 4 a.m. yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad confessed he set the fire because he was upset that the donut shop had started selling other food, including fried chicken, last month, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The doughnut store was gutted and Ahmad&#8217;s business damaged.<\/p>\n<p>A new owner, Mike Chhor, had been set to take over the doughnut store yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Chhor, who paid $25,000 for the business, watched as it went up in flames.<\/p>\n<p>Fire Marshals Michael Durkin and Robert Cristadoro reported finding a juice container and spray can that reeked of gasoline inside Ahmad&#8217;s restaurant. They also spotted a hole in the wall dividing the two shops.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators said Ahmad had been complaining to other store owners about losing business to the doughnut shop.
