{"id":2651,"date":"2007-08-21T10:27:05","date_gmt":"2007-08-21T18:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2007\/08\/state_law_stops_the_inexorable_flier.html"},"modified":"2007-08-21T10:27:05","modified_gmt":"2007-08-21T18:27:05","slug":"state_law_stops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2007\/08\/state_law_stops.html","title":{"rendered":"State Law Stops The Inexorable Flier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A state law went into effect yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/local\/newyork\/ny-nycirc215340161aug21,0,3442465.story\">that allows property owners to opt out of receiving unwanted fliers and circulars<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>If menus madden and advertisements annoy, city dwellers will soon be able to stop them before they land on their doorsteps, thanks to a state law that hit the books yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The pizzeria, barber shop or delicatessen down the street will be banned from dropping its advertisements at buildings that post a sign saying unauthorized fliers are not welcome. Violators will rack up fines ranging from $250 to $1,000 per violation.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors of the law say the circulars not only create litter but are also a safety hazard. &#8220;You leave your house for three days, you come home and there&#8217;s 11 fliers on your lawn,&#8221; said Assemb. Mark Weprin (D-Little Neck). &#8220;Then people know nobody&#8217;s home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The city will wait to enforce the law until the Legislature reconvenes in the fall, Weprin said.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because city lawmakers want to modify the law for multifamily buildings.
