{"id":3067,"date":"2008-01-17T06:29:47","date_gmt":"2008-01-17T14:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2008\/01\/cop_in_jam_from_chop_shop_scam.html"},"modified":"2008-01-17T06:29:47","modified_gmt":"2008-01-17T14:29:47","slug":"cop_in_jam_from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2008\/01\/cop_in_jam_from.html","title":{"rendered":"Cop In Jam From Chop Shop Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yet another reason <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2008\/01\/you_cant_go_on.html\">to eliminate city workers&#8217; free parking privileges<\/a> &#8212; keeping them out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/01172008\/news\/regionalnews\/chop_shop_sting_bags_queens_cop_433571.htm\">trouble<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A Queens cop and several other city employees were busted for insurance fraud in a chop-shop scam, authorities said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Shantell McKinnies, 27, assigned to the 102nd Precinct, was one of 61 car owners busted in an undercover sting conducted by the NYPD and the Queens District Attorney&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n<p>McKinnies and the other vehicle owners would pay a middleman a small fee to take their cars to a chop shop to be stripped, a spokesman for DA Richard Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>The owners would then allegedly file false insurance reports and receive a substantial reimbursement.<\/p>\n<p>They didn&#8217;t realize undercover cops were running the chop shop as part of the 16-month operation.<\/p>\n<p>McKinnies paid the undercover officer $12,000 to dispose of her car and received $26,000 from her insurance company, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to McKinnies, a city buildings inspector, a school safety officer, the security director of a city-run hospital, and one registered sex offender were also busted.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yet another reason to eliminate city workers&#8217; free parking privileges &#8212; keeping them out of trouble: A Queens cop and several other city employees were busted for insurance fraud in a chop-shop scam, authorities said yesterday.
