{"id":3513,"date":"2008-06-11T07:58:57","date_gmt":"2008-06-11T12:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/?p=3513"},"modified":"2008-06-11T07:58:57","modified_gmt":"2008-06-11T12:58:57","slug":"shock_the_monkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2008\/06\/shock_the_monkey.html","title":{"rendered":"Shock: The Monkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d reckon that the possibility that an exotic monkey could bite off the finger of a 2-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/ny_local\/2008\/06\/10\/2008-06-10_frightening_warning_on_exotic_pets.html\">is in fact a dramatic reason exotic animals are not good pets<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Many of the people who live along 198th St. in Hollis knew about their neighbor&#8217;s monkey, named Sampson, who roamed freely in an elaborate outdoor cage.<\/p>\n<p>What they didn&#8217;t know was that the seemingly harmless capuchin monkey was an illegal pet whose sharp teeth could maim a small child. <\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s exactly what happened last week when Kimberly Salinas toddled up to the chain-link fence that separates her home from Mimwon Khan&#8217;s backyard. <\/p>\n<p>The monkey bit the 22-month-old&#8217;s hand, almost severing a finger. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I heard the screaming,&#8221; said neighbor Moona Jahangir, who rushed to help. &#8220;The pinky was hanging and her bone was out.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Kimberly underwent more than 12 hours of surgery at Bellevue Hospital in an effort to repair her damaged hand. She remained in the hospital yesterday. <\/p>\n<p>The monkey was euthanized so it could be checked for rabies.
