{"id":4898,"date":"2009-05-29T08:01:23","date_gmt":"2009-05-29T13:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/?p=4898"},"modified":"2009-05-29T08:43:18","modified_gmt":"2009-05-29T13:43:18","slug":"the_tax_may_not_be_in_the_bag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2009\/05\/the_tax_may_not_be_in_the_bag.html","title":{"rendered":"The Tax May Not Be In The Bag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The big bold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2009\/05\/guess_ill_have_to_start_returning_all_my_beer_cans_in_those_blue_new_york_times_home_delivery_bags_from_now_on.html\">plastic bag tax<\/a> (the one whose yearly windfall inexplicably jumped from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2008\/11\/16_million_represents_35_percent_of_the_infrastructure_improvements_the_city_implemented_in_connection_with_the_two_new_baseball_stadiums.html\">$16 million in early discussions<\/a> to somewhere around $100 million) seems to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/money\/2009\/05\/29\/2009-05-29_bloomberg_fee_on_shoppers_who_pick_plastic.html\">blowing in the wind like something out of Alan Ball&#8217;s head*<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has decreed the nickel-a-bag proposal &#8220;is off the table,&#8221; according to City Council sources. <\/p>\n<p>Aides to Quinn privately confirmed the development, which could add to the mayor&#8217;s woes of filling a $1 billion revenue gap in the new budget due July 1. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not going to go negotiate a budget here,&#8221; the mayor said when asked about the development. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And Christine Quinn is certainly pro-environmental.
