Kennedy Airport after escaping from her travel crate about a month ago as she was being loaded onto a Delta Airlines flight to California, recently visited a garage in Flushing, according to a Long Island woman who joined a search party looking for the dog last weekend.

Darlene O’Sullivan, of Inwood, looked for Vivi Saturday and Sunday along with one of the dog’s owners and two $1,000-a-day search dogs named Cade and Boone. On a tip, O’Sullivan said the dogs picked up Vivi’s scent near Baisley Pond Park in South Jamaica, before losing it. Then, a woman called the search party to report that she had spotted Vivi in Flushing, near the 196th Street block on 46th Avenue.

Cade and Boone picked up the scent, which was much stronger than it had been in South Jamaica, O’Sullivan said, and searched for several blocks in that area of Flushing as volunteers plastered the area with fliers. Vivi, though, remained elusive.

The search party returned to Flushing Sunday morning, O’Sullivan said, and Cade and Boone once again picked up Vivi’s scent, this time focusing on 193rd Street between 46th and 44th avenues. Eventually, Cade hit on the smell and went right to a house in the area. O’Sullivan said the house’s owner reported that his dog had been barking the previous night, leading volunteers to believe Vivi had visited the area and possibly the house’s garage and that they were only one day behind the Whippet.

I get the sense at this point that Vivi may not actually want to go back to its owner.
