{"id":939,"date":"2006-04-07T09:53:13","date_gmt":"2006-04-07T17:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2006\/04\/when_the_buildings_away_the_rats_will_play.html"},"modified":"2006-04-07T09:53:13","modified_gmt":"2006-04-07T17:53:13","slug":"when_the_buildi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/04\/when_the_buildi.html","title":{"rendered":"When The Building&#8217;s Away The Rats Will Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Carroll Gardens street now knows that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/boroughs\/story\/406601p-344293c.html\">rats need buildings in which to live<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A Carroll Gardens block has been taken over by rats, and the city Health Department has done little to combat the menacing pests, residents say.<\/p>\n<p>Since a demolition project began on a Luquer St. lot last fall, rats have made the street their home, scurrying around in broad daylight, diving into garbage cans and nesting in car engines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They sit there and look at you; they are not afraid,&#8221; said Lisa Demaio, 29.<\/p>\n<p>To get inside her building, the mother of two young girls said she&#8217;s forced to throw bottles &#8220;to scatter the rats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, a rodent lay dead next to three overturned traps in front of the lot.<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>Residents believe the rats were stirred up by the demolition work at 100 Luquer St., where an 11-story condominium tower is set to rise.<\/p>\n<p>An owner of the lot agreed &#8212; but said there is little he can do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rats are not something we can control,&#8221; said Moses Gross, a partner on the construction project.<\/p>\n<p>Gross said his office has hired an exterminator, who is set to begin work next week after receiving repeated calls from neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it will help,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Every time you do a demolition, they come out.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Carroll Gardens street now knows that rats need buildings in which to live: A Carroll Gardens block has been taken over by rats, and the city Health Department has done little to combat the menacing pests, residents say.
