{"id":442,"date":"2012-02-15T21:16:08","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T02:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/?p=442"},"modified":"2012-02-15T21:42:55","modified_gmt":"2012-02-16T02:42:55","slug":"taking-down-the-to-do-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/02\/15\/taking-down-the-to-do-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking Down The To-Do List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eventually Jen took down the to-do list that she composed and posted on the refrigerator sometime after we moved into Kawama:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/todolist.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama To-Do List\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Spraypainting the chandelier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/01\/25\/a-fluke-is-not-just-a-fish\/\">we talked about<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also talked about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/02\/12\/theres-nothing-more-annoying-than-the-self-satisfaction-of-someone-who-peels-paint-off-a-bannister\/\">the kitchen cabinets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Painting the dressers in the bedroom involved using the same paint we used for the stenciling in the bedroom; that paint was a brand name that proved to be of terrible quality.<\/p>\n<p>Painting the dining room sideboard and replacing the handles entailed spraypainting the dresser the owner left in the basement and changing the pulls:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/03001-29-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/15706-02-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hanging the craft shelves involved me purchasing a special masonry drill bit to drill into the exterior wall; I <em>think<\/em> the shelves will stay where I put them; so far, so good.<\/p>\n<p>&#034;Stairs&#034; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/02\/12\/theres-nothing-more-annoying-than-the-self-satisfaction-of-someone-who-peels-paint-off-a-bannister\/\">we discussed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paint touchups were just that; not a big deal, though I was quietly relieved that the flat white we bought somehow matched the existing white on the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>The bathroom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/01\/23\/so-about-the-pink-sink-in-the-bathroom\/\">faucet<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/01\/22\/the-story-of-the-rock-n-roll-toilet\/ww.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/01\/22\/the-story-of-the-rock-n-roll-toilet\/\">toilet<\/a>, showerhead (nothing much to say about that except I&#039;m thankful it works) and caulking &#8212; pretty straightforward. Did I mention that the secret to caulking is to use painter&#039;s tape for smooth edges? I had no idea that&#039;s what you did and often wondered why so much caulking looked so shitty.<\/p>\n<p>Unpacking the front bedroom\/&#034;office&#034; was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/01\/14\/like-they-tell-the-bagger-at-the-checkout-line-if-you-find-space-fill-it\/\">a little more complicated than we thought it was going to be<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/02\/13\/and-then-we-stenciled\/\">Stenciling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/02\/14\/you-go-to-war-with-the-yard-you-have-and-tend-to-it-like-the-meth-addict-you-are\/\">The yard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">. . . . .<\/p>\n<p>At first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2011\/11\/30\/i-dont-wanna-go-to-brooklyn\/\">I was hesitant to move out of our tiny apartment<\/a>. But here are some things that have made it all worthwhile. First, having a dining room meant that we could have a proper dining room table:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/14205-05-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you ever had dinner at our old place, you might have experienced our version of &#034;table leaves,&#034; which just meant that we took our shitty table, appended a television tray balanced on several reference works and put one or two chairs around the coffee table. It was ridiculous. We tried to overcompensate with the food. Anyway, I just about had tears in my eyes once we got this thing assembled. I only wish we could have had more people over since we moved in.<\/p>\n<p>The washer-dryer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/slightest\/2012\/02\/04\/the-best-day-of-our-lives\/\">Enough said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/16806-18-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A backyard. Maybe the idea of having 100 square feet of outdoor space isn&#039;t that impressive to you; I get it &#8212; I&#039;m sure it looks strange to a lot of folks &#8212; but going to 100 square feet from zero square feet is a force multiplier like you wouldn&#039;t believe:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/19907-09-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then there&#039;s growing shit in the backyard. Even if you&#039;re terrible at it:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/23108-10-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s knowing you have roof access, even if it&#039;s a pain to hoist yourself through the hatch and even though it&#039;s pretty knee-buckling at the edge:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/18306-25-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s understanding that changing an air valve on a radiator isn&#039;t that big a deal:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/25311-17-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s understanding that changing a thermostat isn&#039;t that big a deal:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/26012-01-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/26112-01-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s having Con Ed tear up your sidewalk:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/23308-11-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And waiting four months for them to fix it:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/26412-15-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Actually, they did a pretty nice job in the end, and I gather that it was some kind of necessary work . . .<\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s worrying about flooding:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/23708-28-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s having your first fresh Christmas tree instead of the quarter-sized fake thing that fits into a duffel bag the rest of the year:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/25711-29-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It took a while but we finally had our housewarming party:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bigmap\/queens\/astoria\/kawama\/25011-14-11.jpg\" alt=\"Kawama, Astoria, Queens\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And that&#039;s the story of how we got into Kawama.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eventually Jen took down the to-do list that she composed and posted on the refrigerator sometime after we moved into Kawama: Spraypainting the chandelier we talked about.
