“Metzitzah B’Peh” Is Yiddish For “Tremendous Suckup”

The mayor who can be all things to all constituencies — including many seeming non-“progressive” ones, provided they deliver enough votes — perfects his “wondrous rhetorical two-step”:

“First of all, I do not want to get into theoreticals,” he replied. “I did not hear the comments clearly.”

Did not hear, got no time, bye-bye. Mr. de Blasio, who once dodged out the door rather than face questions about his driver’s running a stop sign, has an aversion to being pinned down.

The Observer reporter pressed on. Would you have spoken up had you heard the rabbi’s specific remarks?

“With all due respect, my friend,” he began — the mayor’s use of “my friend” was more like a hurricane siren than a sign of bonhomie — “I did not hear the comments clearly.”

He added that he had “not seen a transcript” and that it was “really theoretical” to ask “someone” these sort of questions. “I just think that’s not fair,” he said.

Hashtag Progressive

Or, when transparency is a filter on Instagram:

In nearly five months in office, de Blasio barred the media from 53 events and limited access to 30 more, an Associated Press analysis of de Blasio’s schedule shows. On a handful of days, his entire schedule was off limits. All told, more than 20 percent of his listed events were closed to the media.

Events in which reporters were notified of their existence but prevented from attending ranged from meetings with government figures such as the mayor of Seattle and Israel’s minister of foreign affairs to sit-downs with the NBA commissioner, the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Russian band Pussy Riot.

[. . .]

De Blasio’s spokesman Phil Walzak noted that any limits imposed on reporters are largely due to logistics, not secrecy.

But some media watchdogs worry that the restrictions in New York reflect a larger trend of government officials limiting access to the media while getting their message out to constituents directly via Twitter, Facebook and their own websites.

“It’s easier to manage the message if you leave the media out of it,” said Hunter College professor Jamie Chandler.

How To Lose The New York Observer In Five Short Months

If you’re wondering how you get from endorsing him for mayor to a sneering ad hominem attack on the one party in charge, the through line is rent stabilization:

Last Tuesday, the Rent Guidelines Board voted to approve a proposed rent renewal increase ranging from 0 to 3 percent for one-year renewals and 0.5 to 4.5 percent for two-year leases.

You read that right: 0 percent.

This fulfills a “rent freeze” campaign pledge that Mayor Bill de Blasio made. But it’s also a very bad idea.

[. . .]

Unfortunately, this is the magical realism you get when there’s an entire political class, from mayor to speaker to council, who have not only never run anything but in many cases have literally never held a real job.

[. . .]

This is silly, opportunistic policy-making designed to pander rather than solve problems. We urge a more thoughtful approach.

Underestimate, pat self on back for fiscal prudence, then revise numbers upward in a matter of days:

The day the deal was announced, his office said the 9-year contract, which includes two years of retroactive pay and raises going forward, would cost the city $5.5 billion.

But according to the mayor’s office on Wednesday, with the impact of the deal, which only extends through fiscal year 2018, will bring the total cost of settling the outstanding teacher’s [contract] to $8.97 billion — a 63 percent increase from the initial estimate.

Progressive Values: Revealed

We’ve said all along, as we make appointments, our standards are clear, we need people who share our progressive values related to the future of this city:

“Bill de Blasio raised prodigious amounts of money from the taxi industry during his run for mayor. Now, one of the consultants who helped him raise money from that industry is helping him regulate it.”
