Cutting Down On Jaywalking To Rein In Pension Costs

Or maybe like using preventive medicine to treat birth defects:

Mayor Bill de Blasio says that a “proactive” approach to governing will help solve the city’s structural budget deficit.

“We think a lot of the proactive strategies to save money in the long run,” he said in response to a reporter’s question about his plans to tackle future budget gaps. “Keeping people out of our jails saves money. We can help to make people who might not have been law-abiding citizens into law-abiding citizens. That also saves money. We can keep folks who would have been homeless from going into our shelter system. That saves money.”

Sometimes You Reflexively Mutter “Are You Fucking Me?” . . . In Front Of A Toddler, Even

This is one of those times. Amid at least one weirdly fawning apology (and one sort of backhanded-yet-interesting semi-half-apology) for a terrible first two months, a report that the mayor was perhaps actually considering John Liu for, among other positions, finance commissioner:

Sources said members of Mayor de Blasio’s transition team floated possible posts to Liu, including Taxi & Limousine commissioner and finance commissioner.

But political observers say Liu still has his eye on elected office and has been exploring another run, possibly for Congress.

How To Marginalize The Progressive Wing Of The Democratic Party Using This One Weird Trick

They promised a mutually beneficial relationship with Albany, and it has certainly been beneficial:

In his first two months in office, Mayor Bill de Blasio has found himself repeatedly at odds with New York’s governor, Andrew M. Cuomo. And at every turn, Governor Cuomo has not only stymied the mayor, but also seized the moment for his own gain.

[. . .]

In the governor’s view, he has offered the mayor an opportunity to declare victory on an issue that was at the center of his campaign. “That’s a clear win for him,” said a senior Cuomo administration official, who insisted on anonymity out of respect for the relationship between the governor and the mayor. “He decides not to take the win.”

Mr. Cuomo, who has been an efficient legislative deal maker, has observed privately that the mayor is still acting as if he held his previous office, that of the city’s public advocate, where the goal was taking a stand, not cutting a deal.

The senior Cuomo administration official said Mr. de Blasio was continuing to seek the tax increase because he wanted to be able to tell his political base that he fought to the bitter end for a worthy cause, regardless of the outcome.

When Public Advocates Attack

Another wise negotiating tactic on the part of the mayor’s team:

Anticipating that a new administration would drop Mr. Bloomberg’s suit, unions representing police officers filed their own challenge to the law along similar grounds.

“Our opposition to this legislation has been and continues to be that it penalizes our members and the public rather than addressing bad policies,” Patrick J. Lynch, the president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, said.

Whether or not to continue that suit could figure into current contract negotiations between the police unions and the city, union officials said.

With Any Luck, The Quid Pro Quo Will Merely Amount To A Mean-Spirited Public Slapdown Of A Single Charter School Franchise

Everyone would rather that than like seven gazillion dollars in retroactive pay in exchange for support for the mayor’s pre-K tax plan. They have to have something in mind in exchange for shitty optics like this:

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña says charter-school students she booted from city-owned space in Harlem “are on their own” and can always go back to regular public schools.
