Faisal Shahzad Versus The UFT

So using the mayor’s logic that the bomber was “[h]omegrown maybe a mentally deranged person or someone with a political agenda that doesn’t like the health care bill or something” perhaps attention now can be turned toward the PBA as the real culprit:

One area that will be spared, however, is public safety. Mr. Bloomberg has decided that the police force, which dropped to 35,641 last year from 40,285 in 2000, cannot absorb any more cuts, especially in the wake of the Times Square bomb scare.

So he will scrap his original plans, as sketched out in his preliminary budget address in January, to reduce the police force by 892 officers through attrition, city officials said.

Less “Thought Provoking” Than Just “Provoking”

People need to learn that art that resembles improvised explosives is never cool, and not only because of recent events:

Barely 24 hours after the Times Square terror scare, firefighters used a crowbar to break into a Flatiron District storefront after a passerby reported what looked like bombs set to explode.

But the Sunday evening fuss was over an art display that included a fog machine, a fake time bomb, and some vials of stinky perfume in containers that looked like little pipe bombs.

The NYPD bomb squad was called in to make sure the display at 1133 Broadway was safe, and firefighters turned off the fog machine to make sure no more passersby would think the artwork was about to explode.

And You Thought The Coen Brothers’ Quirky Take On Life Was Out Of Touch With Reality

There should be a special charge added to offenses perpetrated by criminals who prey on people without legs:

A homeless man is accused of tying his legless friend to the bed in a Grasmere motel, hiding his prosthetic legs so he couldn’t get up, and stealing his property as he lay bound.

Carl Hughes, 33, committed the bizarre theft in the early morning hours on April 19 in the Cosmopolitan Motel at 1274 Hylan Blvd., police allege.

Hughes’ friend, 43-year-old Joseph Valente, was letting him stay in his room in the motel, according to authorities.

At about 2:10 a.m., Valente awoke to find himself tied at the chest with an electrical cord, police allege.

His prosthetic legs and his wheelchair had been moved away from the bed, a law enforcement source said.

Hughes was walking out of his room with a laptop, a debit card, a cell phone and unspecified medication, court papers allege.

Somehow, Valente managed to get free and contact authorities.

Police tracked Hughes to a park bench in Manhattan on Tuesday, and arrested him in connection with the crime, authorities said.

When an officer told him he was being taken to Staten Island to answer for a robbery, Hughes blurted out, “Oh, the guy with no legs!” the law enforcement source recounted.

See Something, Say Something, Sell Something!

But I hope he’s not selling fake Prada bags or anything like that, lest the mayor’s great copyright infringement squad goes and picks on him, what with all this awesome attention he’s getting:

The handbag vendor who alerted cops to Faisal Shahzad’s car bomb is back at work, basking in attention, gratitude and a healthy jump in sales.

Duane Jackson, 58, says revenues are up 30% since he returned to work at 45th St. and Broadway Sunday — a day after he spotted the smoking Nissan Pathfinder.

There’s a constant crowd around his booth. Tourists request autographs and snapshots. New Yorkers — and even some cops — offer hugs, handshakes and thanks.

Look At It This Way, It’s Not Nearly As Wasteful As The 7 Train Extension

Time was, NYC-TV served up glossy commercials for Manhattan businesses, er, attractions to entice potential visitors to visit our fair city (and before that there were the city council hearings!). Now it seems the mayor wants to take the channel in a different direction:

After his speech on environmental reform, reporters and photographers literally chased him through the conference center halls. His words and picture ran in more than 100 publications. New York’s dailies sent reporters who relayed hourly dispatches back home.

Despite this wall-to-wall coverage, the mayor’s office insisted that the city have its own camera crew on hand to record him. On December 12, a couple of days before the mayor flew out on his private jet, a pair of technicians from the city’s TV station, NYC Media, grabbed their camera equipment and took a taxi to Newark Airport. They paid an extra baggage charge to stow their gear, flew overnight to Copenhagen, put up at decent hotels, rented a car, and followed the mayor around, grabbing a bite when they could.

All told, the five-day trip cost $11,220. You can add another $1,500 for a week’s worth of wages for the hard-working cameramen who had to hustle through airports and foreign streets. Net benefit to the city? Their video footage ran for awhile on Channel 25’s “City Scoop” program. Then it went on a shelf in the archives, where it remains today.
