Brooklyn As Agricultural Hall Exhibit At The State Fair

The Portland State Fair:

“It’s pretty obvious that what everyone is doing is better than what exists,” said [a condiment purveyor], whose company dubs itself the “leaders of condimovement.” “People are tired of what’s out there. The system is corrupt and the ingredients that are being used in condiments make them kind of like vegetable junk food — there’s a much more pure way to do it.”

. . .

It might sound Spartan, but the $6 [“horseradish sandwich” at a new Prospect Heights restaurant] — which features just horseradish, sourdough bread, butter and onion — is perfect as is, according to its maker.

“The sandwich needs not a single more thing — no one has really asked for anything else added to it,” said [the restaurant’s chef and co-owner]. “I very much enjoy creating something for nothing.”

(The eatery will serve topped with bacon for an additional $2).

. . .

“People intuit condiments as the basis of choice in food and control over their diets,” [a food historian] said. “People have a yearning to control their food destiny.”

You Can Lead A Horse To A Spiffy Pedestrian Mall . . .

But then the horse sees a group of ne’er-do-wells congregating in front of the Walgreens and decides not to go in:

Kensington residents are shooting down the city’s plan to turn Church Avenue and Beverly Road into a “Parisian” plaza teeming with benches and trees, claiming that the proposed champs elysees will become a home base for neighborhood hoodlums.

“We don’t need more people hanging out,” [a resident] said as she slammed the changes proposed for the corner, where the city wants to bring three benches, three trees, granite bollards and a bike rack to a large patch of concrete in front of a Walgreens. “People already congregate there and if I see a crowd in front of Walgreens, I won’t go in!”

The Brooklyn Nets Are Slowly Killing Our Children

One thing the ridiculous Barclays Center promotional video didn’t mention was how much the arena is doing to encourage healthful eating:

Burger joints are bouncing up around the nearly completed home of the Nets like loose balls as national chains vie with local businesses to win over thousands of hungry fans expected to hit the neighborhood in search of game-time grub.

No less than five new burger spots have opened in the last year within a half mile of the arena — and while the Nets won’t tip off there until September, restaurant owners say the game is already on for them.

Car-Free Fridays Do So Much Good: They Get Neighbors Out To Meet One Another, They Allow Children To Roam Unfettered Without Fear Of A Truck Running Them Down . . .

. . . but as for confounding popular stereotypes, that’s probably a stretch:

A Bay Ridge civic panel approved a controversial proposal for the Third Avenue “Summer Stroll” on Monday, but not because it would have been a boon for area businesses — it did it to show up the back-stabbing broads in “Brooklyn 11223” a show residents believe will give Bay Ridge a bad name.

“We’re going to show them this isn’t ‘Brooklyn 11223,'” said […] a member of the Third Avenue Merchants Association and longtime proponent for the Stroll, where Third Avenue between 81st and 89th streets will be transformed into an open air “piazza” four Fridays in a row starting July 20.

Would You Like Artisanal Sauerkraut And Housemade Pickles On Your Nathan’s Hot Dog? (That’s An Extra Sixteen Dollars, Please . . .)

The Barclays Center looks to the Brooklyn Flea foodcourt for inspiration:

Barlays Center officials are distributing a survey to find borough restaurants and food service businesses that can give a little Brooklyn flavor to the new Prospect Heights arena, set to open in September.

“We are committed to bringing the best of Brooklyn to Barclays Center and to draw on the borough’s dynamic food scene,” said developer Bruce Ratner. “Our goal is cast a wide net to make Barclays Center’s culinary experience as quintessentially Brooklyn as it gets.”
